Yoga - Yoga and Religion
Yoga is not a religion and can be practiced by anyone regardless of their faith. Some people
associate yoga with religion because yoga practice forms an important part of some major religions.
Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism encorage practice of yoga.
This is because yoga practice not only helps the body to become fit but also has a positive effect on
the mind and spirit. However, yoga is not simply an aspect of these religions, it is a set of tools to
help enable the student to become balanced with the world physically, mentally and spiritually,
regardless of their beliefs.
In the same way that lighting of candles is practiced as part of many religions but not confined to
those religions, yoga is a practice which is used by many religious people but available to anyone
who wishes to explore the benefits of the practice.
